Chapter 14

Lucas continued to pace the small examination room. Chloe watched him go back and forth, back and forth, his head bowed and his hands running through his hair. Chloe didn’t know what to say. Hell, she was still trying to figure out how the hell she got pregnant.

“Lucas…please stop pacing. I have motion sickness from watching you,” Chloe looked at him trying to gage eye contact.

“I’m thinking.”

“About?”

“How the fuck you wound up pregnant?”

“And?”

“And what? I don’t have an answer. I thought we used protection. I assumed you were on birth control…” Lucas’s voice trailed off. He didn’t know what else to say.

“Yes, you assumed correct,” Chloe was angry. She was still accepting the fact she was pregnant and didn’t know how the fuck that happened. “I am on the pill, and I’m a Nazi about taking it. Plus, I had a light period two weeks ago. And again, you are assuming that this is your kid. What if it isn’t?”

The words rushed out of Chloe’s mouth before she had time to process them. She was angry at Lucas for assuming anything and more so at the idea that she might have trapped him. A child was the furthest thing from her mind at this point in her life.

Lucas looked at her dumbfounded, “what did you just say?”

“I said you assume it could be yours…” Chloe was interrupted by a knock on the door.

“Come in.”

“Ms. Harper?” A female doctor in her late thirties came through the door wheeling in a portable ultrasound machine.

“Yes that is me.” Chloe responded as she shifted herself up in the bed.

“I’m Dr. Jameson. I will be performing your ultrasound. We are going to make sure the baby is okay and see how far along you are. I assume this is a surprise?” Dr. Jameson began setting up the machine.

“Yes, actually it is. I’m on birth control and I had a light period about two weeks ago. So, surprise yes.” Chloe looked at the doctor for some kind of explanation. Lucas still paced at the other end of the room.

The doctor turned to Chloe, “okay. I need you to slide down to the end of the bed and place your feet in the stirrups. We are doing a vaginal ultrasound.”

Chloe slid down to the edge of the bed and did as she was told. Laying back, feet up in the air, the doctor placed an instrument into her. Lucas at this point has moved next to Chloe to see the screen.

The doctor adjusted the probe and a small image that resembled the shape of an egg appeared on the screen. “This is the amniotic sac and this little thing right here,” the doctor said as she pointed to what resembled a tiny ball toward the side of the egg, “is the baby and fetal pole. From the measurement I took, you are about six weeks along.”

Six weeks. “But, how am I pregnant?” Chloe still wanted an answer.
